Inspiring Emotions through Technology

Inspiring Emotions through Technology

Blood runs through everyone’s veins and love beats in everyone’s hearts. No technology can take that away from us.

When Steve Jobs revealed the first-ever iPhone back in the year 2007, the world as we know it changed. People were no longer ready to differentiate things by the price or the number of pluses and minuses. They were fond of the experiences that were triggered by their own emotions, yes emotions that were beginning to be inspired by the technologies around them.

As a matter of fact, Apple launched a campaign that would set them apart from their competitors by touching the emotions of their users.

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
– Think Different, Apple

The definition of technology can take many forms. In simple terms, technology is known as “the application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life”. But would “technology development” be enough to make an impact?

Imagine a scenario where you are in a need to buy a pair of shoes and you have been given two options to make a purchase:

Option #1 – Visit a crowded marketplace to buy them in a random shop.

Option #2 – Newly opened NIKE concept store is in town and you would end up buying a pair of Nike shoes, probably paying double the price compared to the option above.

Why did you go for “NIKE” instead of another brand? You quickly realized that the experience that you get as a user of NIKE products is far more superior to anything else that you would find in a crowded marketplace. These experiences triggered your emotions, the kind of emotions such as pride, loyalty, and the feeling of fulfillment that would make you feel attracted to a particular brand. Similarly, emotions play a crucial role in everything we do in life. Meeting a person or selecting a product or a service has always been subjective on an emotion.

Do “emotions” matter when it comes to providing technology solutions? The simple answer is a straight YES! The longer one of course with the justification; even though the solution is based on some computer technology, the end-user is always a human being full of emotions. Imagine the time you wanted to purchase a mobile phone, the decision-making process was purely governed by your emotions, right? Similarly, the way of offering technology solutions to different business challenges has to be something that can inspire emotions.

Many systematic approaches consider emotions in providing challenges to different types of problems, especially for the wicked and complex problems. “Design Thinking” is a strategic approach that is built around understanding the user’s emotions (by empathizing) and later using non-linear and iterative approaches to arrive at innovative solutions. Innovation itself is a thought process that involves a lot of thinking and a mix of powerful emotions.
